that ron johnson is out as the ceo of j.c. penney. certainly a lot to go through here when you figure out what it means for his pay structure. when he took over at j.c. penney, he got $50 million in stock to make up for some of the apple stock that was going to vest in a short period of time, that he was leaving behind at apple. he bought nearly $50 million in warrants at that time to buy seven a a quarter million shares of j.c. penney stock, exercised six years later at a price of $29.92. the stock has been sitting at about $15 and change at the close of trading today. certainly getting a spike here. but ron johnson's tenure at j.c. penney appears to be over now according to a source familiar with the situation. >> the stock rose the day he took over the job and it's rising big time as he leaves the job. we'll turn it over to you guys and let you guys on "fast money" chew this around and see what it means for this stock going forward. over to you guys. >> thanks so much. welcome to "fast money." let's go straight to the breaking news in the after-hour session. j.c. penney ceo ron johnson

johnson to this date. and the board of j.c. penney. i spoke to him a moment ago when it became known that the former ceo took a tour of the new j.c. penney proto type store. he hopes that the new prototype works. that many are counting on it. he described ron johnson during his visit. he has been incredibly critical of as delightful and energetic. he said the shops look good but the customer will decide whether this new thing actually works. we will find out when that first shop is scheduled to open in may. the largest shareholder, has the big long position in j.c. penney was making comments today as well at a conference up in boston and he said the criticism of j.c. penney, and he has been ron johnson's biggest defender and j.c. penney's biggest defender to date. in his words, too much change too quickly without adequate testing and that so far the execution has been -- again, in bill's words, something very close to a disaster. no surprise then that we just found out in the annual report that ron johnson got no bonus. his total pay was $1.9 million after some 50 some on million a y

to nicole because we have a winner. okay, not just united health care, but do you believe this? j.c. penney. what is going on, nicole. >> on a day when we're down 150 points. take a look at j.c. penney, it's up 5%. this is a stock that over the last 52 weeks is down more than 52%. and down more than that. and it's obviously been plagued by weak sales and ron johnson came in to try to save the company and did not do so. today is the day that they lifted their shares to a neutral from a sell, not saying buy, but they're being a little more optimistic here, saying it seems that business has picked up and this is what they wrote and their quote. we cannot be certain what sales will look like for the quarter, but we believe it's safe to say that traffic and sales have improved. stuart: wait a second, wait a second, analyst goes from sell to neutral and the stock goes up 5% and they say business is a little improved and that's good for a 5% gain. nicole: can't say for sure, you left out another point. but it seems as their guess and they believe that we may see, maybe, that sales and also maybe t
